Honors Western Literature: English 10
Course Name and Description
This course will progress at an accelerated rate and require the student to think critically by analyzing and synthesizing information from language and literature. Students will demonstrate knowledge and application of writing skills in several expository and creative writing assignments. Construction and completion of a formal MLA style literary research paper is required. Students will be required to research in libraries and online databases that are editorially controlled. Standard usage, functional grammar, correct spelling and punctuation are emphasized in all writing assignments. Oral communication will focus on intelligent, thoughtful responses to literature presented. In this course, students will explore genres of World Literature as well as informational texts. Summer reading novels and assignments have been assigned.
Course Expectations
The student will:
1. Read and analyze a variety of novels.
2. Relate literature to personal experiences.
3. Explore various ideas, theories, concepts, and themes through discussion and writing.
4. Apply themes to current social and cultural issues and interpret their continuing significance.
5. Engage in class discussions.
6. Identify and understand the elements of literature found in the various works.
